Scotland Adventure
Our last trip to Scotland was a great trip, but a bit more adventurous than we were expecting...

image_022a.jpg 73.94 KB Conditions rapidly deteriorating. We're waiting here near the ski area. A police car went by, saying something about the road being closed, but we thought it was because of traffic - eventually we continued on from this point, weaving around stuck vehicles and cars trying to turn around on the unplowed road.

image_023.jpg 116.31 KB Eventually, we found ourselves alone on the road. Obviously there were those who had gone before, but we saw scant proof. The wind was blowing at up to 90mph, making visibility pretty bad.

image_023a.jpg 60.18 KB We remember this drive as being quite hair-raising, though the roads really don't look bad at all in these photos.

image_024.jpg 71.82 KB Somebody who overestimated the abilities of his truck. There was nobody there, they'd already been rescued. Fair warning to us though!

image_025.jpg 118.57 KB After miles of lonely driving, we were suprised to find a queue of vehicles at the bottom of the hill (remember image_003?). We were actually a good bit further behind in the queue, but four-wheeled it past a number of vehicles (including a car stuck in the snowbank), as the army truck had before us. The wind was gusting, causing whiteouts every couple of minutes.

image_026.jpg 44.81 KB The cause of the queue - the driver somehow managed to get his plow stuck in the snowbank. It was quite a while before they finally got it freed.

image_027.jpg 130.77 KB Sitting in the queue, waiting for the snow plow to be freed.

image_029.jpg 127.41 KB Once we were finally past the plow, we found they weren't kidding about the road being closed - here at the Bridge of Orchy, the gates were closed. We had to pass two more roadblocks before we got to the Green Welly (a rest stop).

image_030.jpg 116.54 KB Once we left the Green Welly, we thought we were home free. Unfortunately - and not suprisingly - the road alongside Loch Lomond was closed, so hundreds of travellers were funneled down the only open road. Somewhere up in the front was someone scared to death, as the convoy creeped along the roads at about 10mph. Very frustrating. Eventually, John found us an alternate route, and we shook free of the mob.
