Alice Springs Desert Park

Home Up

We spent an enjoyable day at the park - it is a very good place to learn about the flora and fauna of the Australian Outback. All the birds in the falconry show are raptors we see regularly in the wild.

Black Breasted Buzzard.  After a prolonged strike, this young female finally decided to show up and do her thing - they instinctively know to drop rocks on Emu eggs to get at the insides.

One of the Black Kite's abilities is to snatch dinner off the ground, then transfer it from it's talons to it's mouth while in flight.

A Wedge-Tailed Eagle.  Australia's largest bird.  I was unable to get a good picture of this one in flight.

Grey-crowned Babblers.  These birds make very strange noises, like monkeys or kittens, but their calls always make me smile.  I find their noise quite humorous.

After about 4 hours, we finally left the Desert Park and went down the road slightly to Flynn's Grave.  Flynn started the Flying Doctors.

Flynn's Grave.  We found out later that just a day earlier, the "Devils Marble" that had topped this grave had been removed for return to Aboriginal lands, and replaced with a similar but non-Marble stone.
