The horse was designed and financed by Thomas Taylor, a native of
Kilburn (the village closest to the horse, and cut in 1857. The
work was done by the village schoolmaster, John Hodgson, and 20
students. It is 314ft long by 228ft high. It is cut into limestone
which is the wrong color and needs artificial whitening. This was
first done using gallons and gallons of whitewash, but now chalk
chippings from the Yorkshire Wolds are used. Picture taken from
just outside Kilburn.

Before we actually went up White Horse Bank, we took a side excursion
looking for Newburgh Priory. We found it - closed. But we did find
this interesting and gigantic maple tree.

The White Horse from the parking lot, where we hung out and read
for a while - it was another beautiful day, as you can see. The
horse's head isn't visible, being up the hill to the left.

The remaining images were a bonus: The beautiful weather appears
to have brought out every glider pilot in North Yorkshire. As John
used to fly gliders himself, he found the view on the hill as interesting
as the panoramic view...
