Swaledale Hike near Muker
23 May 2004. Yet another beautiful, warm, sunny day in North Yorkshire. This
walk was maybe 5 miles. Muker is a pretty little dales town at one end of
Swaledale - the first town after coming off the Buttertubs pass.

Not suprisingly, these are Swaledale sheep.

Looking back the way we came - our starting point is not visible,
but is beyond the further wooded hillside in the center. This is
the view from the hill overlooking Swinner Gill.

Swinner Gill. Just left of the trees, the remains of an old smeltworks
can be seen. The waterfall is just barely visible behind the trees.

Not being familiar with the footpath, we tried to cross the river
near Swinner Gill, but there was no crossing. We saw this bridge
in the distance upstream, and made for it (no trail). Crossing over,
we found a sign that warned that this is a private. Oh, well.

As a friend said after seeing this picture, he's a Man Upstanding
In His Field :) I quite like this picture.

At first, I didn't realize this was a cat napping in this tree.

Unbeknownst to us, this weekend was the Swaledale Wollen Festival.
All we noted, though, was this band, and the dozens of people watching.
