How Stean Gorge
22 May
2004. How Stean Gorge is a steep, deepish limestone canyon hidden in the upper
Nidderdale. It is 20m deep in places, and was called "Yorkshire's Little
Switzerland" by the Victorians. Tom Taylor's Cave is over 70 meters long,
and has but a single stalagtite.

I'm told this is a common pastime for children's groups, doing the
water slide.

This is probably a bit difficult to make out. It's the interior
of Tom Taylor's Cave. It is a weird formation. In the foreground,
the lighter rocks are a step up to the darker ones. The rocks then
have sort of an "8" configuration.

These flowers were everywhere. They had sort of an oniony/garlicky
scent, so I'm guessing they are wild garlic.

No Admittance. An old entry gate, by what I'm guessing must have
been the original tourist entrance to the gorge.

This peacock was protecting his hen from the dangerous male peacock
in the car's bumper. He's pecking at his reflection.

This is the peacock Hen. Probably looking for a handout, though
she wasn't as obvious about it as the chaffinches.

...like this guy. Not very good ps work, but there was a bright
blue garbage bin behind him, so I "erased" it.

If you go all the way through Tom Taylor's Cave from the gorge,
you come out here, beneath the flowered bush on the right. There's
a couple of cave openings within what they call the "cat hole".
