"This illustration shows the castle as it may have appeared in the early 13th century. The great windows in the keep are closed with wooden shutters to keep out the cold, and at the top flies the flag of Robert de Vieuxpont, Lord of Brogham. Men in winter coats and boots are gathering firewood, and two of the castle's guards hurry to the gatehouse at the arrival of some knights on horseback. At this time, the stone keep, built by Robert de Viewxpont, was only three storeys high and surrounded by a timber palisade. The timber gatehouse was the original entrance to the castle and led out across a ditch to what was once the Roman fort. The gatehouse and palisade were later rebuilt in stone." |
