Top End Trip, Day 5
Darwin
Today we mostly went shopping, but in the evening was on of the highlights of the trip: A sailboat cruise around Darwin Harbor
![]() topend067 160.80 Kb One of the industrial docs in Darwin. I'm actually taking a picture of the troop carrier, a very interesting looking catamaran. |
![]() topend068 62.77 Kb StarChaser, our ride for the evening. She's a 44' sloop. |
![]() topend069 100.09 Kb Cullen Bay, Darwin. |
![]() topend070 136.34 Kb The way out of Cullen Bay: A set of locks. Here, we are just beginning to move out into Darwin Harbor. |
![]() topend071 69.69 Kb The engine has been turned off, and the main sail is just starting to go up. |
![]() topend072 67.38 Kb Starcatcher's sail just starting to catch the wind. This was my very first sailboat ride, and I found it quite wonderful, even though this was supposed to be a sunset cruise and there was no sunset - too cloudy. It rained on us a couple times as well. |
![]() topend073 123.19 Kb Looking sternward from the bow. The man to the right is the boat's skipper, and the girl standing to the left is his helper. The lady steering is one of the guests, but they have their own sailboat, so her and her husband both took a turn at the wheel. |
![]() topend074 92.45 Kb John and I on Starchaser. |
![]() topend075 69.61 Kb These boats have all been confiscated and impounded. The nearest boat has some guys on it, they've been there for a while, I guess. All of these boats will eventually be sunk. Some I found amazing that they were even seaworthy. |
