Central Australian Riders booth at the 2007 Camel Cup. We sold steak sandwiches, sausage sandwiches and cold drinks. Yea, I did the horses on the sign :)

I worked serving sandwiches until after the lunch rush, then wandered off. The rickshaw races were the first thing I watched.

Preparing for the Imparja Cup. Camel races are rather interesting. You lead a bunch of camels to a canvas "starting gate"...

You try to get them all recumbent, then as soon as the last one lays down (which can take a while 'cause there are always others trying to get back up)... anyway, as soon as the last one lays down, they signal the start, and they all get up again.

AAAAND, they're OFF! Start of the Imparja Camel Cup. Some guy standing next to me commented, "There's more camels in this race then horses in the Melbourne Cup!"

In this race, the camels run halfway around, into a line of cameleers, who try to get them to sit down, take another rider, and take off again. Chaos ensues.

This one was particularly annoyed to be stopped halfway through the race, and vocalized his discontent the whole time. Wish I had a sound byte!

Despite all the chaos and noise, these camels don't look too bothered, even as they race by as this one is.
