Short Road Trip to the Tropic of Capricorn
It's only a few miles out of town. We were a bit bored and it was sunny but cooler, so we went off to visit the Tropic of Capricorn and take pictures along the way (20 Jan 07).

IMG_0229.jpg 142.98 KB This is the highest point on the Stuart Highway, between Adelaide and Darwin. Not terribly high, this monument's only a few miles out of Alice Springs.

IMG_0255.jpg 178.35 KB This is a pretty typical rest stop in Central Australia, a covered area with picnic tables and a cistern. Some wag wrote "beer" above this one's spigot. If only! Anyway, I like the sky in this photo.

IMG_0259.jpg 314.04 KB Water in 16 Mile Creek (it's normally dry), so named 'cause its (wait for it) 16 miles from Alice Springs. This creek closed the Stuart Highway a couple of days earlier from the heavy rains we received.

IMG_0264.jpg 117.10 KB Another picture of 16 Mile Creek. Looks a bit like chocolate milk, doesn't it?

IMG_0267.jpg 113.63 KB I love this. Pretty much the only paved North-South road in Central Australia. This is rush hour, in the full sized image there's a truck coming this way, sitting on the mirage at the end of the road.

IMG_0270.jpg 363.30 KB This is actually an ant nest. Wonder if they're called Birds' Nest ants? Anyway, found this construction rather interesting. The entrance holes were huge too, a good sized mouse could go down there!

IMG_0273.jpg 225.13 KB Small termite mound. We'd stopped near the old Alice Springs airstrip.

IMG_0280.jpg 204.87 KB Entering the Alice from the north. Just to the right, on the far horizon, you might be able to see Alice's trademark towers on Mt. Gillen.

IMG_0282.jpg 210.81 KB View looking south from the backside of the Alice Springs sign.

 |
IMG_0293.jpg 279.62 KB We'd noticed some trucks coming up a road at the sign; decided to go follow the road and see where it went. It went here, to Willy's Waterhole. Some kids were enjoying the replenished water.

IMG_0295.jpg 261.93 KB The only tough spot on the waterhole road (on our way back). This is at the Charles River. Apparently the road used to be paved, it takes a higher clearance to get over that bump...
