Henley - On - Todd, 2001

The Henley On Todd is "the dryest joke in the Red Centre". It is a boat race (and other contests) held in the dry bed of the Todd river.

A typical race. It's harder than it looks, as not only are you real close to those in front and/or back, it's very difficult to run in the fine, loose river sand. This is hard work!

Foul play is common... while these two teams duke it out, the ones to the right are cheating by carrying the boat over their heads.

Another contest is the sand- shoveling. Men have to fill a 44-gallon drum, and women - such as this hard worker here - have to fill a 22-gallon drum. The contestants circle the drum, looking for the driest - and thus lightest - sand. More difficult than normal, as it rained last night.
