The Olympic Flame visits Alice Springs on 8 June 2000
On its way to Sydney for the 2000 Olympics, the Olympic Flame passed through Alice Springs.

![]() p0000002.jpg 93.03 Kb Dangerous Emu! He (the bird, not the guy 'riding' him!) touched noses with me, then went to harass someone else. |
![]() p0000004.jpg 81.25 Kb Some of the buggies in town for the Finke Desert Race this weekend. |
![]() p0000006.jpg 79.06 Kb Yamba. A popular local children's figure (kinda like Barney), he is a honey-ant. |
![]() p0000007.jpg 170.04 Kb Some dirt-bikers, again here for the Finke. |
![]() p0000009.jpg 134.80 Kb The Torch. Or one of them, anyway. I and a bunch of other spectators got to touch this one :) |
![]() p0000010.jpg 95.00 Kb One of the torchbearers. No idea who he is, he carried his torch 500m down the Todd Mall. That's all each bearer ran - 500 metres. |
![]() p0000011.jpg 79.55 Kb Same guy. |
![]() p0000012.jpg 111.29 Kb Torch bearer jogging in (on the left behind the police bike). He will be handing the flame off to the gentleman in the previous pictures. |
![]() p0000013.jpg 224.73 Kb I was told this gentleman is a local school principle. He's a few feet away from handing off the Flame. Due to the crowds, I was unable to get a photo of the transfer. |
![]() p0000020.jpg 34.29 Kb Just a candle. Flame may be a decendent of the Olympic flame, but I don't know for sure. Traditionally, the Flame isn't supposed to be "spread", as each individual flame then becomes an Olympic flame, and then of course it's not supposed to go out. However, one of the dancers did "steal" the flame, then passed it on to children in the front row holding candles like mine. |
